The overall IELTS band is not your average rounded casually — it follows an exact rule that almost no blog explains correctly. Take the mean of the four section bands, then round to the nearest whole or half band. The critical detail: an average ending in .25 or .75 always rounds UP. An average of 6.125 stays at 6.0, 6.25 becomes 6.5, 6.375 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 jumps to 7.0.
This rounding rule creates strategic opportunities. A candidate sitting at an average of 6.125 who gains just 0.125 of average — a single half-band in one section — reaches 6.25, which rounds up to 6.5. The same half-band at 6.625 yields 6.75, which rounds up to a full 7.0. In other words, the marginal value of a half band depends on where you currently sit relative to the rounding boundaries, not on how weak your weakest section is.
The planner above computes every scenario: what the overall becomes if you add 0.5 to each section in turn, and which single improvement crosses the biggest rounding threshold. Frequently the answer is not your weakest section — it is the section closest to pushing the average over a .25 or .75 boundary.
One warning that matters more than rounding: most universities set both an overall requirement and a per-band floor. The Australian subclass 500 visa needs 6.0 overall with no band below 5.0; the 485 work visa needs 6.5 with 5.5 minimum. If your overall is fine but Writing sits below the floor, the overall number is irrelevant.
Worked examples of the rounding rule
L 7.0, R 6.5, W 6.0, S 6.0 → average 6.375 → overall 6.5 (the .375 rounds to the nearer half band, 6.5).
L 7.0, R 7.0, W 5.5, S 6.0 → average 6.375 → overall 6.5.
L 6.5, R 6.0, W 6.0, S 6.0 → average 6.125 → overall 6.0 — the .125 rounds down.
L 7.0, R 6.5, W 6.5, S 6.5 → average 6.625 → overall 6.5 — but adding 0.5 anywhere reaches 6.75, which rounds up to 7.0.
Section score relationships
Writing is statistically the lowest-scoring section for nearly all nationalities, and it is the one most universities gate on. If a retake is needed, expect the largest gain from Writing preparation rather than from polishing Listening or Reading, where a half band requires fewer raw correct answers near typical mid-range scores.
